Sinclairs team uses large plastic covers to heat the soil surface to kill soil-bom diseases and pests. This technique is used extensively in Israel and California, where clear skies aid in heating soil temperatures.

Nutsedge, a weed that germinates and grows below the surface, is a tough weed to kill, Sinclair said. But when it grows up to the hot soil surface, it bums and dies, he said. The only time this technique has worked sufficiently in Florida has been in May, when skies are clear and the weather is dry. Were trying to come up with some methods to make it work as much of the year as we can, said Sinclair, who also is studying other methods to control irrigation under the plastic.

Actually, this is not bad, because its a lot quieter than it normally would be. He was stabbed at least 29 times and decapitated while his year-old brother watched. Police say the murderer is his father.

Ironically, the accused, Eric Star Smith, shares a last name with a woman recently convicted of killing her two sons. Perhaps you have heard of her. For almost a year the public has been inundated with stories and updates about Susan Smith, the year-old South Carolina woman who confessed to drowning her children in October when she sent her car into a lake.

Her sons, 3-year-old Michael and month-old Alex, were strapped inside. Inarguably, it was a horrendous crime. The cherubic faces of the two boys will be etched in Americas collective memory forever; the media and our own consciences wont let us forget.

Unfortunately, it seems we already have forgotten about Eric Star Smith Jr. A couple of days after the teen-ager was killed, newspapers ran the story, but almost as an afterthought to what was making headlines the trial of Susan Smith.

In fact, at about the same time Eric Star Smith Jr. In most newspapers, Eric'Star Smith Jr. Susan Smiths story, however, was headline material unfail unfailingly.

Os course, not every killing makes it to the forefront of news. People are murdered every day, but the media and society seem to latch on to a select few for reasons that are not always clear. The problem with the Smith cases is how eerily alike they are, yet no one seems to be treating them with equal fervor or impor importance.

Unlike the attention given to the Susan Smith case from beginning to end, the murder in New Mexico seems to have been downplayed. Maybe the brutal killing of a teen-ager isnt as compelling as the drowning of two young children. Maybe the fact that Susan Smith initially lied about the whereabouts of her sons makes her actions more damning to the public. Maybe her eventual confession makes the story more newsworthy than the arrest of Eric Star Smith, who has pleaded innocent to all charges.

Then again, maybe society is less tolerant of a mother who kills. Throughout history, women have been viewed as nurturing. They are seen as the ones responsible for children when it comes to love, support and comfort. When Susan Smith confessed to drowning her sons, all of America seemed to gasp the same phrase; How could a mother do that to her own children? Where is that question for Eric Star Smith? A father is just as responsible for a childs well-being as the mother is.

The outrage, attention and publicity that permanently attached itself to Susan Smith seems conspicuously absent from Eric Star Smith. That attitude probably will continue throughout his trial. And if he is sentenced, it seems doubtful that the public will debate with such passion whether to give him the death penalty. Are we saying a fathers love is worth less than a mothers?

The direct quotes and comments were informative and consistent with my understanding of UFs position on this matter.

However, I grew concerned when Mr. White strayed away from Dr. Harts direct quotes and ostensibly paraphrased. Specifically, Mr. White wrote, About 2, black students are enrolled at UF, and a large percentage of them receive race-designated scholarships, Hart said. That passage stuck out like a sore thumb.

I immediately contacted Dr. Hart and asked whether blacks had finally overcome and someone forgot to tell me. She pointed out a serious error in the sentence referenced above.

Namely, she said that large percentages of the UF black student population do not presently nor have they ever received race-designated scholarships. An uninformed reader may ask, what difference does this misrepresentation make? First, this mistake under undermines mines undermines the positive message of our key administrators and defeats the mission of the university. When President Lombardi, Provost Sorensen and Vice President Challoner, among others, express the need for minority scholarships, the misled reader likely will recall the newspaper article.

Unfortunately, they may not recall the particulars, only that they read or heard from a very credible source that most of the blacks at UF already are receiving scholarships. Accordingly, requests made by our leadership for minor minority ity minority scholarships are likely to fall upon less receptive ears because the message could be diluted, haring been dis discredited credited discredited by misinformation in the article. Undoubtedly the journalist was well intentioned; how however, ever, however, the passage mistakenly implies that black students are receiving a free ride while others must fend for them themselves.
